Maria Antònia Llopis-Grimalt, PhD
Holds a degree in Biochemistry (2015) from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB)- with an award for excellence in academic performance-and an M.Sc. in Advanced Microbiology (2016) from UIB. From January to April 2016 she worked on the project “Nanostructured flavonoid coated implants for soft tissue integration” with the TERCIT research group at IUNICS-UIB. Then, from May to July 2016 she held a Santander CRUE-CEPYME fellowship to collaborate with Numat Biomedical S.L. In September 2016 she began her PhD with the TERCIT group with the Project “Bioengineered Titanium Implant Surfaces for Medical Applications”. In 2019, she completed an international stay at Manchester University, specifically in the Wellcome Trust Center for Cell Matrix Research in Prof. Karl Kadler laboratory, and in March 2021, she defended her thesis with international mention, obtaining the qualification of “Excellent cum laude”.
In 2021 she started a postdoctoral position in Professor Noel Caplice laboratory at APC Microbiome Ireland, located at University College Cork. During this time she was involved in several projects evaluating a pig model of metabolic syndrome and the potential beneficial effect of targeting the gut microbiota on cardiac dysfunction. She was also responsible of the development of an in vitro model of inflammed gut to evaluate the beneficial effect of specific bacterial-derived metabolites.
In June 2023 she started a position as scientific manager at IdISBa, overseeing research projects within the institution and coordinating the scientific areas. In September 2024 she secured a lecturer position in the department of fundamental biology and health sciences of the UIB and joined the TERCIT group.
